It really is much easier when the engine is out of the car. I also 3D printed the cam tool so I don’t have to mess around with 3 wrenches and a vice grip, In progress photo before because its more interesting than the completed photo.

So lemme get this straight... the water pump isn’t driven by the timing belt, but it’s tucked away behind it, necessitating belt removal to change anyway?

Hence why there is even a timing belt interval at all to begin with. Its non-interference so you could just run it until the belt breaks. But you WILL cook your engine due to water pump failure if you do that. So following at least the California requirement of 100k just replacing the belt and pump is fine. And you are silly not to also replace the coolant, cam seals, valve cover gasket, accessory belts, and spark plug wires at that same time since they all come out anyways.
